What Is Virtual Private Networking?
A few of the online resources that are available to you when you are on the university’s network are secure and are only accessible if you are on the university’s network. If you wish to access these resources from another location, you can still do so if you dial-up to the university’s network (instructions are provided in another document) or you use a VPN connection. You must connect to VPN before you start your web browser.
Setting up Virtual Private Networking (Windows)
First, check to see if you have VPN support installed (Windows 2000) should always have this already installed; please disregard this paragraph if you are a Windows 2000 user).
1.) Click 'Start' then 'Settings' then 'Control Panel.'2.) Once you are there, open 'Add/Remove’ Programs' then click on the 'Windows Setup' tab.
3.) Double-click on the word 'Communications' in the scroll box (if you uncheck 'Communications' you are going to have some serious problems; so if you do that by accident, click the 'Cancel' button).
4.) Once the 'Communications' window is open, scroll all the way down in the scroll box and click on the box next to 'Virtual Private Networking' only if it is not already check marked.
5.) Click 'OK' then click 'OK' again.
6.) If VPN was not already installed, it will now proceed to install it.
7.) At this point, it may ask for the Windows CDROM; if you don't have it handy, you may try to type in c:\windows\options\cabs or c:\windows\options\install when it asks where to look for the files.
8.) If this does not work, then you must get a hold of a Windows CDROM, for your version of Windows, to continue the install.
9.) If it asks to reboot after this, please do so.
10.) If you don't know which version of Windows you have, right click on 'My Computer' and then click 'Properties;' towards the top, it will tell you which version.

It will ask for your 'User name' (this is your valid UAnet ID. It is also the beginning part of your University of Akron email address) and 'Password' (the password that goes with your UAnet ID).2.
