How To Create a Wireless Network Group

With our era of the mobile phone and the internet, almost everything is done without wires and cables. Because of this, you must be knowledgeable in making gadgets accessories and cordless. Creating a wireless connection between two or more computers (a network group) is easy. However, procedures differ for every operating system. The following information can be used in creating wireless network group for different operating systems - these are general overviews.  For more detailed information, it's best to consult the user manual.

Linux.
A company named Webgear Inc. introduced a wireless network kit that is applicable to Linux. This kit, called the Aviator 2.4 wireless network kit, is composed of two II PCMCIA cards - which when installed and configured will act as Ethernet devices - and two ISA PCMCIA card slots. You will be able to create a wireless network using this kit, a laptop with Linux, IP masquerading and software routing. Note that this kit is for a network of 2 units only: either two laptops, two desktop PCs, or a PC and a laptop.  For more information and support, or to download  the software, you can access www.webgear.com.

Microsoft Windows.  In creating a network group using Windows XP, open the Group Policy Management Editor (GPME.MSC). You will then be prompted to choose the group policy that you want to edit. Once done, click OK and navigate through the explore or console tree to the following locations:

  • Computer Configuration
  • Policies
  • Windows Settings
  • Security Settings
  • Wireless Network (IEEE 802.11) Policies

Note that there is also a wired network policy, so make sure to choose the correct description. There are no default settings related to this wireless network policy. The reason for this is the separation in the policies of Windows XP and Windows Vista; if a company has computers using both operating systems, everything would need to be set manually anyway.

When you start working on the wireless network (by right-clicking), a shortcut menu will appear. This will then give you an option to create either a new Windows Vista policy or a new policy for Windows XP. A dialog box will be shown in the screen for you to input a name and a description - this is optional - for this new group. In this dialog box, you are now allowed to indicate the names of the wireless networks to which you want business or personal clients to connect. You can also arrange the group according to the most preferred wireless network.

When you decide to add a network, you will be asked to choose between an ad hoc network and an infrastructure network. After choosing, you can fix the security settings. After that, other PCs or laptops will be able to connect to you as well.

Apple Mac using Wireless Distribution System (WDS).
The following items are needed to start: Apple Time Capsule, AirPort Extreme Base Station and Apple AirPort Express. The following is the step-by-step guide to create a wireless network group:

  1. Set up the Apple Time Capsule in WDS mode.
  2. Set-up all the parameters. Note that channel numbers and the SSID have to be the same for all the stations to work.
  3. In the Apple AirPort Utility, go to the WDS and Wireless tabs. Input WDS information, click “Update”, and wait for the base station to reboot.  Take note of the generated AirPort ID because you will use this data later to set-up the other stations.
  4. Go to the Wireless Tab and select “Participate in a WDS network” in the wireless mode dropdown option.
  5. Go to the WDS Tab and select “WDS main” and check the “Allow wireless clients” tick box.
  6. Once done, set-up the AirPort Express (AEX) base station as a remote base station using steps C to E.
  7. After the AEX rebooted, set-up last but not the least, the AirPort Extreme Base station. Procedure is same as the set-up of the two first stations.

These procedures will train you to explore and discover the capabilities of the wireless technology. Just like in sports, you will begin to love the thing you do if you learn from it first.
